Where did the name Bengaluru come from? Timeline from 890 CE to 2014

Q: What does Bengaluru mean?

There is no single proven meaning. The popular story is town of boiled beans (Benda Kaalu Ooru), but historians treat that as folk etymology. Other suggestions link the name to a tree or to the idea of guards.

Q: Is it wrong to still say Bangalore?

It is not wrong in everyday speech and everyone will understand. The official name is Bengaluru.

Q: Why do some institutions still use Bangalore?

Many were named long before 2014 and kept the established name for legal, branding or continuity reasons.

The boiled-beans legend

If you grew up in Bengaluru, you probably heard it at school. A Hoysala king, lost and hungry in a forest, is fed boiled beans by an old woman. In gratitude he names the place Benda Kaalu Ooru, the town of boiled beans.

The king is Veera Ballala II, who ruled roughly from 1173 to 1220. In Kannada, benda means boiled, kaalu means beans or grain, and ooru means town. Over centuries the sounds softened into Bengaluru.

ಬೆಂದbenda, boiled

ಕಾಳುkaalu, beans

ಊರುooru, town

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರುBengaluru

The sound change is plausible and the story is easy to remember, which is exactly why it has lasted. One more wrinkle: the kaalu in the legend is the word for a legume (ಕಾಳು). A different word, ಕಾಲು, means leg. In casual English spelling the two look identical, so the story is often retold without anyone checking which one is meant.

The name appears in stone about three centuries before the king in the legend was born.

That is the problem. If the name already existed in the 9th century, a 12th-century king cannot have invented it. Treat the legend as a story Bengalureans like to tell about their city, not as an explanation of where the name came from.

Evidence rating: folk legend

The Begur inscription is the best evidence we have

At Begur, in south Bengaluru near the Nageshwara temple, stands a veeragallu, a hero stone. It is written in Halegannada, or Old Kannada, and it remembers a warrior killed in a battle fought at a place the inscription calls “Bengaluru”. The setting is the Western Ganga period.

A summary of what the stone records, not a transcription of it.

Historians commonly date the stone to about 890 CE. That makes it the earliest known reference to the name and shows that Bengaluru was already a recognised place more than a thousand years ago, not a nameless forest.

What it cannot tell us is the meaning. It records a battle, not an etymology, so it proves the age of the name but not its origin. Scholars also still debate the exact reading and dating of early inscriptions, so different books give slightly different dates.

Evidence rating: strong for the age, silent on the meaning

Two other theories: a tree and a guard post

The tree theory

In this reading, benga names a tree often identified with the Indian kino, known in some sources as vijayasar. Bengaluru would then mean the town of the benga trees.

It fits a common Indian pattern, where towns take their names from local trees. But the exact tree and word are not settled, and the idea depends on linguistic reconstruction rather than a direct statement in an early source.

Evidence rating: plausible, not proven

The “city of guards” theory

A smaller line of interpretation splits the name into parts that suggest a place of guards or watch, which would suit a frontier settlement on the edge of a kingdom.

Like the tree theory it rests on how the old syllables are read, and it has far less support in mainstream scholarship.

Evidence rating: speculative

Which theory should you trust?

We know when the name existed far better than we know what it first meant. Anyone who says the origin is definitely one thing is simplifying. Here is how each theory holds up. A fuller red bar means stronger evidence.

Begur inscription

Supports it: a physical inscription in Old Kannada. Weakness: says nothing about meaning.

Strongest on the age of the name
The tree (benga) theory

Supports it: fits a common Indian naming pattern. Weakness: species and word are not settled.

Plausible
The city of guards

Supports it: fits a frontier-town setting. Weakness: weak linguistic support.

Speculative
The boiled-beans legend

Supports it: memorable and widely told. Weakness: the name is older than the king in the story.

On Kannada Rajyotsava, along with 11 other Karnataka cities. Bengaluru becomes the official English spelling.

Dates for the early periods vary slightly across sources. Treat earlier entries as widely cited dates, not exact calendar days.

Why “Bangalore” existed at all

The English form came from how British administrators heard and wrote the Kannada name. Through the 19th century, as the Cantonment grew and English-language records multiplied, “Bangalore” became the standard spelling in maps, railway timetables and later global business.

It is the same word, filtered through English, much like Bombay and Mumbai or Madras and Chennai. The 2014 change did not invent a new name. It restored the Kannada pronunciation in English writing.

Both spellings are understood, and “Bangalore” still appears in older company names, institutions and global brands. The official name today is Bengaluru.

How to say it

Beng-ga-LOO-ru

A soft “ng” sound, the stress on the third syllable, and a light final “u”. Regional variations are common, and locals will understand any reasonable attempt.

Twelve cities changed their names together

Three things most articles get wrong

~~“The name came from the Hoysala king’s beans.”~~

The inscription evidence suggests the name was already in use centuries earlier.
~~“Kempegowda named the city for the first time.”~~

He is credited with founding it as a planned town in 1537, but the name appears much earlier.
~~“Bangalore was renamed because the old name was wrong.”~~

The change was about restoring the Kannada form in English, not correcting an error.

Bengaluru’s name story is a small version of the city’s larger one: layered, contested, and shaped by whoever was in charge at the time. A Ganga-era battlefield, a Vijayanagara planned town, a Mughal and Mysore handover, a British cantonment and a modern metropolis each left a mark. The name survived all of them, which is itself a clue to how deep its roots go.
